Endodontics (Canal Treatments)

Sometimes problems can be experienced due to tooth decay due to various factors. Tooth decay is one of the most common diseases in society. Sometimes it manifests itself with tooth decay, which manifests itself with pain, and sometimes with sensitivity felt in cases such as hot and cold, or food jams accumulated between the teeth. In some cases, bleeding gums or bad breath may occur. But the good news is that you may be at a curable point with root canal treatment. Sometimes it is possible to save a rotten tooth instead of pulling it out with root canal treatment. Today, even teeth that will be lost with root canal treatment can be saved.

What is endodontics?

Endodontics is a specialty of dentistry. Teeth, the first organ of the digestive system, are the starting point of digestion and are living tissues. Endodontics department physicians, namely endodontists, primarily aim to protect the natural teeth of individuals. For this reason, they work to protect the tooth as much as possible and keep it in the mouth.

If the tooth nerve is damaged due to decay, trauma or other reasons, the body sees this nerve as a foreign material and causes inflammation. In such cases, it is necessary to remove the nerve and fill the area with filler. We call this treatment as Root Canal Treatment.

If you have a crack in your tooth,

If you have deep decaies

If you have had a blow to the tooth in the past or recently,

It must be checked and treated by a dentist. An abscess may form in the untreated root of the tooth and may progress to the jawbone, causing pain.

How is Endodontic-Canal Treatment Performed?

Root canal treatment consists of stages that may require one or more sessions depending on the condition of the tooth.

A hole is made in the back or crown of the tooth to be treated, the diseased pulp is removed, the cavity and root canals are cleaned and shaped for filling. In treatments that require more than one session, temporary fillings are made between each session to protect the tooth. At the end of the treatment, the temporary filling is removed and filled permanently. Broken teeth may sometimes require post application.

Does root canal treatment cause pain?

Since the nerves of the teeth are removed during root canal treatment, the tooth is not affected by external factors. However, a slight pain, pressure or tenderness may be felt for the first few weeks after the treatment. However, if you still have pain at the end of this period, either the filling is incomplete or the canal is insufficient. In these cases, the filling, which we call retreatment, is removed again, the root canal is cleaned and re-treatment is applied. If this treatment does not respond, additional procedures called root tip resection can be applied.

Many of our patients want to have a tooth extracted instead of dealing with a long treatment period or root canal treatment. However, the priority should always be to protect the tooth, and no prosthesis can be like your own tooth. The success rate in root canal treatments is over 95%.

Dental problems are more common in pregnant women. Dentist control should be done regularly for the health of both mother and baby. If you are experiencing pain during pregnancy and your dentist approves of root canal treatment, you can have treatment with the approval of your doctor.
