Teeth Whitening

None of us want our smile to be yellow. For this reason, thanks to the teeth whitening process, it is possible to have a whiteness between 2 and 6 shades with a 1-hour application.

If you are considering whitening your teeth, we have tried to explain the most effective techniques and procedure for you.

What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening, also known as bleaching; It is the process of removing stains and discolorations on the teeth by applying tooth bleaching gel containing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the teeth. However, before this procedure, it is absolutely necessary to check with the dentist and determine the cause of these stains. Tea, coffee stains, nicotine-related stains can be removed in the dental clinic with the help of ultrasonic or manual devices. However, if the stains are internal and are located in the layer under the tooth enamel, it is possible to partially remove these stains.

Most whitening products you see in advertisements or come across in pharmacies are designed to remove external stains and contain more detergent than ordinary toothpastes. The results to be obtained from these products are extremely different.

In order to remove the internal staining on the teeth, the chemical agent must reach the stain. Firstly; It is necessary to clean external stains as caused by factors such as smoking, tea, coffee, wine, and then work is done to reach the molecules that cause coloration with the applied bleaching gel.

There are multiple methods for teeth whitening. It can be applied as Office Type (Laser or blue light), home type applications and products sold on counters.

Laser Teeth Whitening

In the laser teeth whitening procedure, a whitening gel with a higher concentration (25-40% hydrogen peroxide) is used compared to home-type systems. The biggest advantage of this method is that the control is completely professional. The dentist ends the procedure when the targeted color/effect is achieved.

The teeth whitening gel used in the procedure needs intense blue light to activate. In laser bleaching applications, it is a whitening gel that mainly provides the whitening process.

After an application that lasts for about 30-60 minutes, the teeth are noticeably whiter. Additional procedures may also be required for an optimum result and longer lasting whitening.

Laser teeth whitening is applied in our dental clinic in Antalya, with each session for 15 minutes. Generally, the desired level of whitening is achieved in a single session. If necessary, your doctor can also do the second session. Due to the high concentration of the gel used during the application, protective measures must be taken.

The use of glasses by both the patient and the physician during the application will prevent problems such as splashing of the laser / light source or the gel used.

Procedure Stages

It is possible to obtain results in a very short time compared to home-type applications in the procedures applied in the clinic.

1- Tooth Cleaning

Before starting the laser teeth whitening process, a professional dental cleaning is done in our clinic in Antalya, and calculus, tartar and all and external stains on the teeth are removed.

2- Color Detection and Photographing

With the help of a scale on clean teeth, the current color of your teeth is measured and photographed, allowing you to see how effective the procedure is at the end of the session.

3- Taking Protective Measures

Your dentist places a special retractor in your mouth. This plastic piece; It prevents the cheeks and lips from contacting the teeth. Also language; It cannot touch the teeth and whitening gel by touching this part from the inside.

After the isolation of the surrounding tissues, contact with the gel should be prevented on the gingiva adhered to the tooth. For this, special gingival barrier varnishes are used.

Gingival barrier as soon as it is applied, it sticks to the gums and prevents the whitening gel from coming into contact with the gums.

4- Application of Whitening Gel

Teeth whitening gel is applied to all visible surfaces of the teeth, neither too thick nor too thin, leaving no gaps.

The applied gel is activated by means of a special blue light and the decomposition of the gel is accelerated.

5- Whitening Process

The activated gel stays in the mouth for an average of 15 minutes in each session and shows its whitening effect during this time.

After 15 minutes, the whitening gel is cleaned from the mouth and the whitening of the teeth is checked with the help of the color scale.

In cases where the teeth do not whiten at the desired level, your dentist may repeat the session up to three times in a single appointment.

There is no rule that the sessions will be 15 minutes each. 5 and 8 minute time slots are also available on most devices.

In rare cases, within 48 hours after bleaching; In some people, a short-term sudden tooth sensitivity may be felt.

In case of hypersensitivity, your dentist may apply fluoride or recommend using a desensitizing toothpaste.

Things to pay attention

Things to consider before whitening

Before starting the tooth bleaching process, a few points should be evaluated by your dentist.

Is the tooth structure and enamel healthy?

Are there coatings or fillings on the teeth?

Are there any teeth that have lost their vitality, are necrotized or have had root canal treatment?

Are there tooth sensitivity and root openings in the tooth neck areas?

Do you smoke, excessive use of coffee, tea or wine?

In patients with advanced gingival problems, gingival treatment should be completed before starting the whitening process.

In cases where the root surfaces are exposed due to gingival recession, contact of the bleaching gel to the open root surfaces should be well isolated as it may cause severe pain.

Is teeth whitening harmful?

The whitening process is a very reliable application when applied professionally and correctly. Tooth enamel is resistant to whitening gel and does not react.

In office-type applications generally applied in the clinic, no complications are observed during or after the procedure.
